2000年にロシアで起きた原子力潜水艦事故を「アナザーラウンド」でアカデミー国際長編映画賞を受賞したトマス・ビンターベア監督が完全映画化。 乗艦員118名を乗せ、軍事演習のため出航した原子力潜水艦クルスク艦内で魚雷が突然暴発した。司令官ミハイルは、爆発が起きた区画の封鎖を指示し、部下と安全な艦尾へ退避を始めるが、艦体は北極海の海底まで沈没。生存者わずか23名という大惨事となってしまう。海中の異変を察知した英国の海軍准将デイビッドは、ロシア政府へ救援の意志を伝えるが、沈没事故の原因は他国船との衝突にあると主張するロシア政府は軍事機密であるクルスクには近寄らせようとしなかった。乗組員の生命よりも国家の威信を優先するロシア政府の態度に、ターニャたち乗組員の家族たちは怒りをあらわに抗議する。

Presumably, lessons were learned in the aftermath of this disaster. As with many a tale like this - we will probably never know the whole story of how the Russian submarine "Kursk" came to sink and of the desperate attempts to rescue the stranded sailors. What Thomas Vinterberg does here, though, is direct a film with a plausible, quite compelling, narrative that elicits good, solid, performances from Matthias Schoenaerts and August Diehl who manage to convey the claustrophobic scenes on board remarkably well. Max von Sydow exemplifies the old guard establishment figure to a T and lends all the more to the frustration that maybe more could have been done to save lives had politicking played a less prominent role in the salvage process. Any comments on the accuracy of the efforts at international collaboration would be speculative, but Colin Firth does imbue some genuine sense of eagerness to assist and an awareness of the urgencies involved. This is well worth a watch.
